Jeanne: I was told that if you inject the medication inappropriately, the synthetic in the medication is toxic and if the capsule is ruptured that is what causes the bad effects. But then I don't know for sure.
I know my vet did not administer Rocky's injection, a tech that was still in High School did, but I did not find this out till after we thought Rocky was dying. |
My baby lost 10 pounds in 24 hours, suffered through 10 days of touch and go, endless shots, endless tests, but in the end, thank God, he made it.
ProHeart 6 destroyed 1/3 of his liver. We are still in a touchy place as we are unsure of any long-term effects. Rocky is not exactly the way he use to be. He is extremely sensitive, but he has an enormous heart and grand spirit.
I have also noticed his joints bother him, there appears to be pain, particularly on one side. I literally have had to nurse him back to health, with the help of some fantastic doctors at VRC in Little Falls NJ. What is even weirder is that Rocky was their last patient. The corporation that owned the hospital closed down this facility. These phenomenal specialists are no longer available and I have not been able to find the leader, Dr. Nancy Sanders. I credit her for saving Rocky's life.
Fort Dodge picked up the charges over 10,000 dollars I was told.

Since this injection was given, I have shared my story with countless of other people and vets. Most vets say that they have had many dogs on it and have no problems. But I wonder how many they treat just for the symptoms of vomiting etc. All reactions do not have to be as severe as Rocky's
Fort Dodge Animal Health argues that in their studies none of the dogs died, nor experienced these adverse events. I have told vets and folks alike, that when you look at the size of the sample in the study and the way it was written, the sample is small, and the words do not address what happened afterwards.
I could go on, but this is a very painful memory. I only wish they would take ProHeart 6 off of the market. I thought the FDA was working on it but apparently not.
April: PLEASE, PLEASE don't use ProHeart 6 on your pet. Even if the vet tells you it's safe, you don't know that for sure ... don't take the chance! The suffering for our Rocky is so severe and he hadn't even seen his first birthday. It may have been almost to late for Rocky but it isn't for you. Please, if you have a dog or know someone that has a dog, please let them know of this. Also, please pray for Rocky that there are no further complications.
